GTA VI Pre-Orders Land June 25 - And the Ultimate Edition Question Everyone's Asking

As tiered editions and pre-order bonuses become the norm for blockbuster launches, GTA VI's rollout is the latest test of whether fans are buying hype or genuine value.

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI open at midnight local time on June 25. There's no Ultimate Edition to actually buy on a store shelf.

Rockstar's own customer-support FAQ confirms it: there is no physical Ultimate Edition SKU. Buyers picking up a boxed copy get a Standard Edition download code in the case, full stop. The only way to get the Ultimate Edition tier is to redeem that code first, then purchase a separate digital "Ultimate Edition Upgrade" through the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store afterward. The FAQ notes that upgrade can be bought "at any point after their digital download code has been redeemed" - meaning there's no rush, but also no shortcut. Physical and digital are not the same purchase path anymore. They're two transactions dressed up as one edition name.

What Ultimate Edition actually buys

The Ultimate Edition bundles premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel tied into Jason and Lucia's story, according to Rockstar's newswire post. But the FAQ adds a wrinkle: none of it drops at once. Bonus items are, in Rockstar's phrasing, "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter." That's a deliberate pacing choice, not a checkout screen. Players unlock the premium tier gradually, chapter by chapter, rather than loading in on day one with everything unlocked.

The game's official synopsis, per Rockstar's store page, sets the stakes for that story: after a score goes wrong, Jason and Lucia find themselves "in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida."

The Vice City pack has an expiration date

Every pre-order and every purchase made before November 20 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack regardless of edition tier. Rockstar's store listing itemizes it directly: a '55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, a set of period outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. Miss that window and the pack is gone. Digital pre-orders separately include a free month of GTA+.

Standard Edition runs $79.99 on Rockstar's store. Digital pre-order customers can begin pre-loading November 12, and physical copies also become available that day specifically so in-box codes can be redeemed and preloaded in time for the November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game remains single-player only.

One more detail worth flagging for anyone buying across borders: redemption region is tied to the platform account, not the point of sale. A code purchased in a different region than the account it's redeemed on simply won't work.

The tiering here lands at an odd moment for the industry's edition culture generally, where "Ultimate" often just means "everything, up front." Rockstar's version means something narrower: the same story, the same two protagonists, but a slower reveal of what you paid extra for.
